Outpatient Help for Mental Health and Substance Use in Adolescents

Adolescents today face more pressure than ever from social media, academic stress, peer influence, and volatility in their families or social groups. When mental health challenges overlap with risky behaviors like vaping, drinking, or gaming, teens need more than discipline, they need support and tools to change behaviors.

Insight Into Action Therapy’s Dual Diagnosis Recovery Program© (DDRP) is built specifically for teens and their families. We offer outpatient care that helps adolescents take control of their behavior, understand their emotions, and begin to build a healthier future without missing school or being removed from home.

What Is a Dual Diagnosis?

A dual diagnosis means your teen is dealing with both a mental health issue and a substance use or behavioral addiction. Common combinations we see include:

  • Depression and alcohol use
  • Anxiety and internet addiction
  • ADHD and risky sexual behavior or stealing
  • Mood swings with compulsive spending or social media overuse

Many families don’t know where to turn or what problem to address first. Our adolescent-specific DDRP© is the place to start.

Program Structure

Our Adolescent DDRP© is an outpatient program that includes:

  • Weekly 90-minute group therapy with other teens
  • Individual therapy for emotional regulation and behavior change
  • Family therapy to improve trust and communication
  • Drug/alcohol screenings and parental support
  • Mental health and addiction education for both teens and parents

All sessions are led by licensed clinicians experienced in adolescent development, dual diagnosis recovery and family therapy.

Five Clinical Phases

We don’t treat symptoms in isolation. We work through five phases to tackle co-occurring conditions that support long-term change:

  1. Evaluation
A comprehensive intake for the teen and at least one caregiver. This includes clinical interviews, screenings, and treatment planning.
  2. Education
Understanding the “why” behind behavior is key. We teach teens and families about mental health diagnoses, risk patterns, and healthy coping.
  3. Primary Treatment
In group sessions, teens learn accountability, boundaries, communication skills, and how to resist peer pressure.
  4. Relapse Prevention
We build real-world strategies: identifying triggers, crafting a relapse prevention plan, and maintaining structure and support at home.
  5. Maintenance
After stabilization, many teens transition to periodic check-ins, individual therapy, or drug screens to maintain progress.

For Parents and Caregivers

Your involvement is essential for your adolescent’s recovery process. We consider you part of the recovery team and keep you informed every step of the way.

 We provide:

  • Monthly treatment reviews with you and your teen’s therapist
  • Coaching on screen time, sleep, boundaries, and peer relationships
  • Support during difficult behavioral moments
  • Guidance for transitions back to school or sports after a crisis

Why Insight

Our program is clinically sound, built on evidence-based practices and over 60 years of combined experience treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. We design our adolescent track specifically with teenagers in mind, recognizing the realities of impulsivity, risk-taking, and the intense identity formation that marks this stage of life.

As an outpatient and insurance-friendly program, the DDRP© works within your family’s existing routines, making treatment accessible without major disruption. Most importantly, we focus on real change. That means helping teens develop healthier habits, rebuild trust, improve communication, and integrate all of this into their lives in a sustainable way, not just temporarily to be compliant.
