Psychological Testing & Evaluation

When you need more than an educated guess

Sometimes therapy and medication can only go so far without sharper data. Symptoms overlap, old diagnoses do not quite fit, or treatment is not working the way it should. Psychological testing gives a structured, objective look at how you think, feel, and function so treatment is based on more than impressions.

At Insight Into Action Therapy, psychological testing is available for children, adolescents, and adults when the picture is complex, unclear, or stalled. Evaluations occur at the same practice as your psychiatrist and therapist, so results translate directly into a plan instead of sitting in a file.

What psychological testing is

Psychological testing is a formal, time limited process that uses standardized tools to answer specific clinical questions. It can include:

  • Clinical interviews
  • Cognitive and neuropsychological tests
  • Personality and symptom measures
  • Behavior and rating scales from parents, teachers, or partners
  • Structured feedback and written reports

This is a targeted evaluation designed to clarify diagnoses, strengths, vulnerabilities, and the interventions most likely to help.

When testing is helpful

Psychological testing is often recommended when:

  • You have tried multiple medications or therapies without consistent progress
  • Different providers have offered conflicting diagnoses
  • Symptoms look like more than one condition and no one is sure which is primary
  • School, work, or legal systems are asking for documentation to support accommodations or decisions
  • You want a deeper understanding of your own patterns before making major life or treatment choices

The question is usually some version of: “What is going on here, and what should we do differently?”

Common reasons adults seek psychological testing

For adults, testing can help answer questions such as:

  • Is this depression, bipolar spectrum, trauma, burnout, or some combination?
  • Is chronic anxiety really ADHD, OCD, generalized anxiety, or something else?
  • Do I meet criteria for ADHD, or are focus issues driven by anxiety, sleep, or mood?
  • Are there autism spectrum traits contributing to social and sensory stress?
  • What personality patterns are affecting relationships, work, and treatment response?
  • How do cognitive strengths and weaknesses affect performance, coping, and decision making?

Evaluation can also support planning for higher level care, return to work, disability applications, or coordination between multiple providers.

Psychological testing for children and teens

For younger clients, parents usually ask for testing when they see a mix of school problems, behavioral issues, and emotional symptoms that no one has fully explained.

Testing for children and adolescents can address:

  • Attention, impulsivity, and possible ADHD
  • Learning issues, processing speed, and academic performance
  • Anxiety, mood, and behavior concerns that look different at home and school
  • Autism spectrum traits, social communication challenges, and rigidity
  • Effects of trauma, grief, or medical events
  • Readiness for program placement or school accommodations

Reports can inform IEP or 504 plans, educational planning, treatment recommendations, and decisions about what to prioritize at home and school.
