Therapy for Children

Counseling for Your Child

Kids do not walk into the room and say, “I’m anxious, dysregulated, and struggling with transitions.” They show it in other ways: meltdowns over small things, headaches and stomachaches before school, new fears, clinginess, or a kid who used to be social now wanting to be left alone.

Insight Into Action Therapy works with children as young as 6 who are struggling emotionally, behaviorally, or socially and need more than “give it time.” Our clinicians provide outpatient therapy for children within a practice that also includes psychiatrists and psychologists, so treatment can scale if needs become more complex.

How emotional distress shows up in children

Parents usually call after they have tried consequences, rewards, and “talking it through” and something still feels off. Common patterns include:

  • Big reactions to minor frustrations, or sudden anger that comes out of nowhere
  • School refusal, morning battles, or somatic complaints on school days
  • Sleep problems, nightmares, or wanting to sleep in your room again
  • Social problems, conflict with peers, or being left out
  • Regression in behavior after a move, divorce, loss, or other stress
  • A child who says “I don’t know” to every question about feelings, or shuts down when you try to help

Underneath that, we are often looking at anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, grief, adjustment issues, or emerging mood and behavior disorders.

How we evaluate children

A typical evaluation includes a parent interview focused on history, strengths, and current stressors, age appropriate time with your child, and screening for anxiety, mood, attention, and trauma symptoms. When needed and with your consent, we coordinate with schools and pediatricians to understand how things look in the classroom and at home.

We then have the parent introduce the therapist so the child knows this is a trusted person. Once the child feels comfortable, the therapist will meet individually with them. From there, you get a working formulation and a treatment plan in plain language: what we think is happening, what we are targeting, and how we will measure whether anything is improving.

What we treat

Child therapists at Insight see a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety, worries, and separation issues
  • Depressive symptoms and low self esteem
  • Behavioral concerns, anger, and impulse control problems
  • School and peer issues, bullying, and social anxiety
  • Adjustment to divorce, blended families, relocation, or new siblings
  • Trauma and grief after medical events, accidents, or loss
  • Early signs of OCD, perfectionism, and rigid thinking

When questions arise about learning, attention, or development, our psychologists can provide formal psychological testing to clarify what is going on and guide next steps.

Therapy for Children

Children do not respond to adult-style talk therapy alone. Sessions are structured but flexible, using a blend of:

  • Play and expressive work
Therapists use play, drawing, games, sand tray, and other creative tools so children can show feelings they cannot explain yet. Play therapy techniques are woven in as needed to help kids process emotions, reduce stress, and practice new coping strategies in a safe context.
  • Skills and practice
Depending on age, children learn concrete skills for noticing and naming emotions, calming their bodies, handling frustration, and solving problems more effectively. This might look like games that build frustration tolerance, role plays for social situations, or structured exercises for worry and “what if” thoughts.
  • Direct conversation
Older children and preteens spend more time talking through friendships, school pressure, and family dynamics, with the therapist linking those stories to specific skills and choices.

Therapists adjust the mix based on age, temperament, and diagnosis with sessions being purposeful and impactful. Goals and progress are reviewed and developed with parents.

Parent involvement: what you can expect

Parents are part of the intervention and in the loop with our clinical team. For most child therapy, parents can expect:

  • Regular check-ins to discuss progress and challenges at home and school
  • Coaching on how to respond to behavior in ways that support therapy goals
  • Collaboration around routines, limits, and consequences that create more stability
  • Honest feedback about what is helping, what is not, and what needs to change in the environment

Integrated child services under one roof

Insight Into Action Therapy is an outpatient practice with a full clinical team: therapists,  psychologists, and psychiatrists. That matters for children because needs shift over time.

Within one practice, families can access:

  • Individual child therapy
  • Play-based and expressive interventions
  • Family sessions when dynamics at home need direct attention
  • Psychological evaluations when there are questions about attention, learning, or complex symptoms
  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication management if indicated

Why Parents Trust Insight

Parents bring their children to us when they want more than “kids are resilient, let’s wait.” They want a clear clinical read on what is going on, a concrete plan, and therapists who can translate child behavior into something actionable. They value a practice where play therapy, skills work, family support, testing, and medication management can be integrated rather than scattered across town. They also expect direct communication about progress: where their child is improving, where they are still stuck, and what the next set of goals should be.

If you know something is wrong and your child cannot explain it, bring in structured help, don’t keep guessing. Contact our office to schedule an appointment for your child and start a focused plan to stabilize things at home, at school, and inside their day-to-day life.
