Substance Use Disorder Treatment for Adults

Therapy for Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders

When “normal” use stops feeling normal

In Northern Virginia and the DC metro area, substance use often hides behind a functioning life. People keep working, paying the bills, and taking care of families, while relying on alcohol, pills, or cannabis to get through the week. Nightly drinks become non-negotiable, prescriptions are stretched, or “weekend” use quietly moves into weekdays.

Treatment for alcohol, drugs, and addictive behaviors at Insight Into Action Therapy is built for that reality: clear assessment, direct feedback, and a plan that fits high-pressure schedules.

Substance use on a spectrum

Insight knows that all use is not addiction. Substance use occurs on a spectrum and should be treated accordingly. Your care plan reflects where you are on that spectrum and what you want to change.

Insight offers:

  • Alcohol moderation work led by co-founder Cyndi Turner, author, developer of the Alcohol Moderation Assessment, and national trainer, with co-founder Craig James
  • Harm reduction psychotherapy that meets you where you are and focuses on meaningful change over time

You do not have to stop using substances to work with us. You do not have to attend AA, NA, or 12 Step to receive care here. Support takes many forms, and there are multiple legitimate paths to recovery.

How substance use shows up

Adults who work with our team often describe patterns such as:

  • Alcohol that has shifted from social to necessary, with blackouts, hangovers, and repeated “I’ll cut back” promises
  • Anxiety meds, sleep aids, pain medications, or stimulants used faster or in higher doses than prescribed
  • Cannabis used nightly for stress or sleep that has become hard to scale back
  • Mixing substances to manage the day: alcohol with benzodiazepines, stimulants with cannabis, or rotating drugs to function
  • Drinking that stays “controlled” publicly but is paired with secret rules, hidden quantities, or frequent solo use
  • Periods of high performance followed by binges or runs of use that derail sleep, mood, and reliability for days or weeks

Substances often sit alongside other compulsive behaviors like gambling, pornography, risky sex, or relentless online activity that serve the same escape function.

Care is individualized, but most plans draw from several core components:

Individual therapy

One-to-one work focused on triggers, beliefs that keep use in place, specific strategies for high-risk situations, repairing damage in work and relationships, and building a daily structure that does not depend on substances.

Adult Dual Diagnosis Recovery Program (DDRP)

For adults who need more structure, DDRP combines group therapy with individual work and focuses on how mental health symptoms and substance use interact, early warning signs, and realistic relapse prevention. This program also satisfies ASAP treatment requirements, and Insight is an ASAP-approved evaluator and treatment provider for Virginia.

Medication and psychiatric support

Psychiatrists evaluate for depression, anxiety, bipolar spectrum, ADHD, OCD, trauma-related conditions, and can consider medication options, including MAT or MOUD when appropriate. They coordinate with your therapist so everyone works from the same plan.

Family and relationship involvement

When partners or family are directly affected, selected sessions focus on boundaries, communication, transparency, and what accountability will look like going forward.

What changes we aim for

Treatment is defined by measurable shifts, such as:

  • Fewer episodes of use and reduced intensity when they occur
  • Less secrecy and less time spent managing a double life
  • More stable sleep, focus, and emotional baseline
  • Fewer crises at work and home linked to use or withdrawal
  • Decisions driven by long-term goals instead of short-term relief
  • Increased trust and connection in key relationships.
