Court Involved Clients

When the legal system is now part of the equation

Legal involvement changes everything. A DUI, possession charge, custody dispute, board complaint, or workplace incident can suddenly make mental health and substance use more than a private concern. Courts, attorneys, probation officers, and professional boards want documentation, clarity, and a plan.

Insight Into Action Therapy works with court involved clients who need clinically grounded evaluations, treatment, and reporting that hold up in real life. The goal is simple: honest assessment, appropriate treatment, and clear communication about progress.

Common situations we see

Adults often come to us when one or more of the following is in play:

  • DUI / DWI or substance related driving offense
  • ASAP required evaluation and treatment
  • Possession or paraphernalia charges
  • Domestic incidents where substance use or mental health is a factor
  • Probation or parole requirements for treatment or evaluation
  • Custody or visitation cases where a parent’s stability is under scrutiny
  • Professional, licensing board, or employer concerns about impairment
  • Court orders to complete a substance use evaluation or ongoing treatment

Each situation has its own requirements and deadlines. Our job is to address the clinical reality and provide documentation that reflects it.

Evaluations for court involved clients

Many people are referred first for an evaluation. Depending on the situation, that may involve:

  • Substance use evaluations to determine severity, risk, and recommended level of care
  • Psychiatric evaluations to clarify diagnoses, safety concerns, and the role of mental health symptoms
  • Psychological testing when there are questions about diagnosis, cognitive functioning, or risk that require more data
  • Expert witness testimony opinion on diagnosis, recommendations and treatment
  • Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP) Insight is an ASAP approved evaluator and treatment provider

  • ASAP group when court ordered to treatment after a substance related charge to Treatment options for court.

Evaluations may include a detailed clinical interview, use of standardized tools, drug/alcohol screening, review of relevant records, consult with involved professionals, and a recommendation. Reports can be prepared for courts, attorneys, probation, boards, or employers when properly authorized.

We do not guarantee a particular outcome. We document what is present and what is clinically appropriate based upon American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) levels of care.

Treatment options for court involved clients

When treatment is recommended or required, plans are built around what is clinically indicated and what the court or conditions specify. Depending on need, that may include:

  • Individual therapy focused on substance use, mental health, decision making, and risk reduction
  • Dual diagnosis treatment when mental health and substance use are tightly linked
  • Alcohol Moderation or Harm Reduction Psychotherapy to reduce consequences of use when complete abstinence is not warranted
  • Medication management for conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar spectrum disorders, ADHD, PTSD, and OCD
  • Medication assisted treatment (MAT/MOUD) when appropriate for opioid or alcohol use disorders
  • Couples or family sessions when relationship dynamics are part of the problem or part of the support system
