Vivitrol® (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension) is administered as part of a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program to help prevent relapse for alcohol and opioid dependent clients. As an opioid antagonist, Vivitrol® works by blocking molecules from attaching to receptors, nullifying the euphoric effects of alcohol and opiates introduced to the body. Vivitrol® is non-addictive and proven to help reduce heavy drinking days in alcohol dependent clients when combined with therapy.

The extended-release injection of Vivitrol® is effective in the body for one month. This allows clients to focus on the necessary lifestyle changes for a balanced recovery.

Using opioids even in small amounts before a Vivitrol® treatment can lead to accidental overdose, serious injury, coma, or death. Because of precipitating withdrawal clients must be opiate free before receiving Vivitrol®.

A thirty-minute screening is necessary prior to receiving a prescription for Vivitrol®. Insight contracts with a specialty pharmacy that can overnight your shot to be administered by psychiatrist Dr. Sumit Anand as part of an office visit. Please call 703-646-7664 for more information.
